OMS cria centro regional para controle do Ébola

Agência da ONU amplia resposta ao crescente número de infecções pelo vírus na Guiné, Libéria e Serra Leoa. Mais de 600 pessoas já morreram.

Em resposta ao crescente número de infecções pelo vírus do ébola na Guiné, Libéria e Serra Leoa, a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) acabou de activar um Centro Sub-regional para Coordenação de Surtos em Conacri, capital da Guiné.
Até 12 de julho, o número de casos de ébola nestes três países da África Ocidental foi estimado pela Organização em 964, sendo que 603 deles terminaram em morte.

STORYLINE:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has activated a Sub-regional Outbreak Coordination Centre in Conakry, Guinea in response to growing number of Ebola infections in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The centre will be responsible for ensuring effective use and deployment of limited, but highly critical resources based on prioritization and agreed objectives.

Benido Impuna, WHO epidemiologist and manager of the response centre explained that the centre will "bring together all the partners who are involved in supporting the affected countries" to provide technical assistance and to mobilize the financial resources needed to stop the transmission of the Ebola outbreak in the 3 affected countries.

The establishment of the centre was requested by health ministers from 11 African countries at an emergency meeting convened by WHO in Accra, Ghana, 2-3 July.

The Accra meeting identified critical challenges and gaps in the response: coordination, communications, cross-border collaboration, treatment of patients, contact tracing and community participation, human resources and financial support.

As of 12 July, the total number of cases attributed to Ebola in these three countries stands at 964, including 603 deaths.
